Sandleford Priory, Berkshire
Sandleford Priory is a former Augustinian monastery and later country house near Greenham, Berkshire. The Priory of St John the Baptist at Sandleford was founded for the Augustinian Canons Regular by Geoffrey, Earl of Perch and his wife Maud some time between 1193 and 1202. The number of canons at the priory eventually dwindled until at the death of the last prior in 1478. The estate was given to the Dean and Canons of Windsor. They leased it out as a farm to various tenants before the Kingsmill family from Sydmonton Court converted it into a country house. This was subsequently much extended and elaborated by Mrs. Elizabeth Montagu. The site is within the council area of West Berkshire.
