Saltburn-By-The-Sea, Yorkshire
Saltburn-By-The-Sea is a seaside town in Yorkshire, in the North Riding. Prior to 1858, Saltburn was a small hamlet, now known as Old Saltburn. The town was developed by the Pease family, owners of the Middlesbrough Estate, after Henry Pease saw "a prophetic vision of a town arising on the cliff and the quiet, unfrequented and sheltered glen turned into a lovely garden". The Saltburn Cliff Lift is one of the world's oldest water-powered funicular railways. Saltburn has the only remaining pier in Yorkshire. The town is within the council area of Redcar and Cleveland.
