Salcombe, Devon

Salcombe is a resort town, lying on the western side of the Kingsbridge Estuary in the South Hams area of southern Devon. The earliest reference to the settlement is from 1244. It remained a small fishing village until the 19th century, during which it developed into a major ship-building port. Known as a "Schooner Port", Salcombe became famous for building fast "fruit schooners" that imported produce from the Azores and Mediterranean. The town developed as a holiday resort during the interwar period. Salcombe Castle (aka Fort Charles), built between 1535-1539 for protection against French raids, was slighted by Parliamentary forces after a prolonged Civil War siege. SalcomBe Harbour is a major a recreational leisure port. The town is within the council area of South Hams (Devon).
