Saintfield, Down

Saintfield is a large village in County Down. It is within the townland of Saintfield Parks, in the civil parish of Saintfield. The settlement was begun by landowner Sir James Hamilton during the Plantation, but mostly developed, and named 'Saintfield', by later owner Major General Nicholas Price in the early 18th century. The village grew on textile manufacturing. Saintfield Parish Church (C of I) was built in 1776, incorporating an older parish church. Saintfield First Presbyterian Church dates from 1777. Mary Mother of the Church (RC) was built in 1890, replacing an earlier Catholic church built in 1787. The village has seen significant suburban development since the 1950s. The village is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
