Rugby, Warwickshire

Rugby is a market town in Warwickshire, close to the River Avon. Rugby became a market town in 1255. Rugby School was founded in 1567. Rugby is famous for the invention of rugby football, the invention being credited to William Webb Ellis, a Rugby School pupil. Rugby grew into a significant town following the arrival of the railways in the mid 19th century. The poet Rupert Brooke was born in Rugby in 1887. The town is within the council area of Rugby (Warwickshire).
