Royton, Lancashire
Royton is a town in Lancashire. It lies close to the source of the River Irk, at the foothills of the South Pennines. Royton first appears in records in 1212, its early history being linked to it manor house, Ryton Hall. By the mid 19th century, Ryton had emerged as a mill town. Royton Town Hall (1880) includes a domed roof and clock tower topped by a copper cupola. Royton War Memorial lies at the summit of Tandle Hill. Royton Hall, the former manor house first built in the 13th century, was demolished in 1939. The town is within the council area of Oldham.
