Royston, Hertfordshire / Cambridgeshire
Royston is a town which grew up at the crossing of two ancient thoroughfares, Ermine Street and the Icknield Way. The Icknield Way here runs at the very foot of the Hertfordshire Downs, forming Melbourn Street and Baldock Street in the centre of the town - and forming the border between Hertfordshire to the south and Cambridgeshire to the north. The High Street and the heart of Royston are to the south of the Icknield Way in Hertfordshire and rise up the hill. The High Street is on the line of the Great North Road, which is also the old Roman Road, Ermine Street. The town has long lain across the county border and much of the northern part of the modern town lies in Cambridgeshire. The town is within the council area of North Hertfordshire (Hertfordshire).
