Rowley Regis, Staffordshire

Rowley Regis is a town in Staffordshire, within the Black Country. The village of Rowley Regis, around the parish church of St Chad, dates back to at least the 12th century. Regis was added to the name in around 1140 since it formed part of the Royal hunting grounds. Although Rowley Regis saw industrial development in the 19th century, it remained a village until the end of that century. For local government purposes, from 1894-1966, the ancient parish of Rowley Regis was the basis of Rowley Regis urban district (a municipal borough from 1933), during which time the area saw large-scale urban development. The current St Chad's Church dates from 1923. The town within the council area of Sandwell.
