Rotherhithe, Surrey
Rotherhithe is a metropolitan district on the south bank of the River Thames in Surrey, forming a south-eastern suburb of London. The earliest reference, to 'Rederheia', is from c. 1105. The original village was centred around the riverside parish church of St Mary on the western side of the Thames peninsula that the modern district occupies. The present St Mary's Church, Rotherhithe dates from 1715. Beginning with the construction in 1699 of the Great Howard Wet Dock, the Rotherhithe peninsula was transformed over the next century by the creation of the complex of docks, timer ponds and canals known as the Surrey Commercial Docks. The era of containerisation spelt the end for the docks which, from the 1980s, were extensively redeveloped, and renamed Surrey Quays. The 1980s also saw the area along the riverfront redeveloped as housing through a mix of warehouse conversions and new-build developments. The district is within the council area of Southwark.
