Rostrevor, Down
Rostrevor is a large village, located at the foot of Slieve Martin on the coast of Carlingford Lough in County Down. It is within the townland of Rosstrevor, in the civil parish of Kilbroney. The name is reputed to originate from Sir Edward Trevor, landowner in the early 17th century. The present Kilbroney Parish Church (C of I) opened in 1822. The previous church, supposedly built on an original site established by St Brónach, stands in the old graveyard nearer the lough. A large weathered cross that is patterned on its west face has been dated to the 9th century. St Mary's Star of the Sea Church (RC) was designed by Thomas Duff and completed in 1851, replacing an earlier church. The church houses St Brónach's Bell, believed to date from the 9th century and discovered in a fallen tree in the old graveyard in 1885. Rostrevor became a popular tourist destination in the 19th century. It has seen significant expansion since the Second World War. The village is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
