Roker, Durham

Roker is a seaside resort and northern suburb of Sunderland, County Durham. The resort began when Roker Terrace was built upon the cliff tops in 1840, followed by Monkwearmouth baths, Roker Park, the pier and lower. In 1898 Roker Park Stadium was built and Roker became known worldwide for being home to Sunderland AFC (until 1997). During the 20th century the resort gradually became part of the Sunderland urban area. It is within the council area of Sunderland.
