Rochester Cathedral, Kent

Rochester Cathedral (formally the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is a Church of England cathedral in Rochester, Kent. It is the seat of the Bishop of Rochester. The 7th century missionary Justus was given permission by King Æthelberht of Kent to establish a church dedicated to Andrew the Apostle on the site of the present cathedral. Gundulf was appointed as the first Norman bishop of Rochester in 1077 and began the construction of a Norman cathedral in 1080, work being completed around 1137. There was further expansion and rebuilding in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Lady Chapel dates from around 1490. The cathedral is within the council area of Medway.
