Rochester, Kent

Rochester is an ancient cathedral city in Kent. Rochester is at the lowest bridging point of the River Medway. A great deal of history is found in its streets: Romans, Anglo-Saxon, Mediæval and modern. The settlement was founded by the Romans who also built the first bridge across the Medway here. In AD 604, the bishopric and cathedral were founded. The mediæval period saw the building of the current Rochester Cathedral (1080–1130), of Rochester Castle (1089) and the establishment of a significant town. Rochester was granted city status in 1211. The city is within the council area of Medway.
