Rochdale is a large market town in Lancashire. It lies amongst the foothills of the Pennines on the River Roch. Rochdale was granted a royal charter in 1251. Subsequently, Rochdale flourished into a centre of Lancashire's woollen trade. Rochdale rose further to prominence during the 19th century as a major mill town and centre for textile manufacture. Rochdale Town Hall (1871) is one of the United Kingdom's finest examples of Victorian Gothic revival architecture. The town is within the council area of Rochdale.
