Rievaulx Abbey, Yorkshire
Rievaulx Abbey is a ruined Cistercian abbey in Rievaulx, Yorkshire, in the North Riding. Rievaulx Abbey was founded in 1132 by twelve monks from Clairvaux Abbey. Under the second abbot, Saint Aelred of Rievaulx, the abbey grew to some 140 monks and 500 lay brothers and to have five daughter houses in England and Scotland. At the Dissolution the confiscated monastic buildings were rendered uninhabitable and stripped of valuables. The abbeys ruins are in the care of English Heritage. The site is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
