Rievaulx, Yorkshire

Rievaulx is a small village in Yorkshire, in the North Riding. The village's origins lies in the dissolution of Rievaulx Abbey and the desire of the new owner, the Earl of Ruland, to continue the iron-smelting industry which had ben conducted by the monks. He established a charcoal-fired blast furnace and the associated structures and workings in what became the village of Rievaulx. This continued until its disruption during the Civil War, with production ceasing in 1647. The village then became agricultural in nature. It is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
