Richmond, Surrey

Richmond (sometimes Richmond upon Thames) is a town in Surrey. It stands on the east bank of the Thames with the Old Deer Park to its north and Richmond Park to its south. The town derives its name and early growth to the building of Richmond Palace by King Henry VI in the early 16th century, and its 19th century expansion to the coming of the railway in 1846. Richmond Bridge (1777) connects Richmond to Twickenham in Middlesex. Richmond Green was the site of one of the earliest county cricket matches, Surrey vs Middlesex in 1730. The views from Richmond Hill are protected by an Act of Parliament. The town is within the council area of Richmond upon Thames.
