Redbridge, Essex

Redbridge is a former hamlet that is now a suburban area in the north of Ilford, Essex. At least four bridges have crossed the River Roding here. Hockley’s Bridge, named after a mediæval landowner, stood until 1642 when it was replaced by the red-brick bridge from which the place name derives. This was replaced by an iron bridge in the 19th century and by the present bridge in the 1920s. By the 19th century, a scattered hamlet existed to the east of the bridge, including the extant Red House public house. The area was developed as a suburb of Ilford, primarily during the inter-war years. The area is within the council area of Redbridge.
