Rathfriland, Down
Rathfriland is a market town in County Down. It lies at the intersection of the townlands of Cross, Kiltarriff, Rossconor and Lissize, in the civil parishes of Drumgath and Drumballyroney. The area was once the capital of the Magennis family, the Gaelic lords of Iveagh. They built a castle here around 1610, the ruins of which may still be seen on the hill upon which Rathfriland sits. The town was founded by William Hawkins who was gifted the land by Charles II. The Market House, built for the linen market by Miss Theodosia McGill in 1760, dominates the main square. The town has seen significant expansion from the mid 20th century. The village is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
