Rainham, Essex

Rainham is a town in Essex. It is recorded in Domesday as 'Raineham'. For much of its history Rainham was an agricultural settlement, using the River Thames for trade. The area to the east of the village saw large-scale suburban development between the wars. The post-war period saw the development of much of the marshland between Rainham and the Thames as industrial land. The 12th century Church of St Helen and St Giles is the oldest building in Rainham. Rainham Hall (NT) was built in 1729 for Captain John Harle. The town is within the council area of Havering.
