Queen's Quarter, Antrim
Queen's Quarter (aka University Quarter) is a suburban area in south Belfast, County Antrim. It is within the townland of Malone Lower, in the civil parish of Shankill. The area was still rural when the Botanic Gardens were opened in 1828, though the gardens were not opened to the public until 1895. The Ulster Museum has been located at the gardens since 1929. Queen's College, Belfast (later Queen's University Belfast) opened in 1849. Its main building, the Lanyon Building, was designed by Sir Charles Lanyon. The area saw major suburban development from this time. The idea of Belfast having specific 'quarters' is largely a tourism creation from the late 20th century. They do not generally correspond with traditional districts of the city. The name 'Queen's Quarter' has though entered more general usage to describe this area of the city. The area is known for its Victorian architecture, independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. Queen's Quarter is within the council area of Belfast.
