Purley, Surrey

Purley is a suburban town in Surrey. The earliest reference to the estate or Purley is from the 12th century, though it remained a small hamlet to the north-west of Purley House until the late 19th century. Following the opening of Caterham Junction railway station close to the hamlet in 1855, the area around the station began to be developed. The station was renamed Purley Station in 1888. From 1915-1965, for local government purposes, Purley and its neighbouring town of Coulsdon formed the basis of Coulsdon and Purley urban district. During this period, especially the inter-war years, both towns saw large-scale suburban development. The town is within the council area of Croydon.
