Prestwich, Lancashire
Prestwich is a town in Lancashire, lying to the east of the River Irwell and north-west of Manchester. The Church of St Mary the Virgin (formerly St Bartholomews) has lain at the centre of the community for centuries. Prestwich remained a small settlement until the arrival of the railway in 1881 encouraged affluent merchants from Manchester to build villas and it grew to become a suburban town. The oldest part of Prestwich, around Bury New Road, is now known as Prestwich Village. The town is within the council area of Bury.
