Preston, Lancashire

Preston is a city in Lancashire, standing on the north bank of the River Ribble. Preston was granted Guild Merchant charter in 1179, giving it the status of a market town. Textiles have been produced in Preston since the middle of the 13th century. Preston prospered during the Industrial Revolution, becoming a densely populated engineering centre. St Walburge's Church has the third tallest spire (309ft) in the UK. There are many historic buildings including the Harris Museum (1877), the Miller Arcade (1899) and the Corn Exchange (1824). The city is within the council area of Preston.
