Poyntzpass, Armagh / Down

Poyntzpass (aka Poyntz Pass) is a small village which lies primarily in County Armagh, though partly east of the Newry Canal in County Down. It is within the townlands of Tullynacross, Brannock, Federnagh (all in County Armagh) and Loughadian (in County Down), in the civil parishes of Ballymore (County Armagh) and Aghaderg (County Down). The village is reputed to have been founded in the late 18th century, though named for Sir Charles Poyntz, an officer in the Elizabethan army, in honour of a military action he led at the strategically important pass through bogs and woods on the county border. The village is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
