Powderham Castle, Devon

Powderham Castle is a fortified manor house near Powderham, Devon. The mediæval core of the house was built by Sir Philip Courtenay around 1390. The house saw many later alterations and additions, notably in the 1750s and 1760s. Charles Fowler undertook many alterations in the 19th century, designing the Gothic dining room and effectively turning the castle round by transforming the old service yard to the west into a forecourt with a gatehouse. The appellation "castle" was added probably no earlier than the 17th century. It is within the council area of Teignbridge (Devon).
