Portsea, Hampshire

Portsea is a urban area in Portsmouth, Hampshire. The area developed to the north of the old town of Portsmouth from the end of the 17th century to house workers at the naval dockyard. The area was previously known as The Common but became known as Portsea (after Portsea island) from the late 18th century. The area was incorporated into the municipal area of Portsmouth in 1904. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was born in Portsea in 1806. It is within the council area of Portsmouth.
