Portrush, Antrim / Londonderry
Portrush is a seaside resort town, lying principally on the Rathmore Head peninsula on the north coast of County Antrim, though with south-western suburbs spreading into County Londonderry. It is within the townlands of Port Rush, Meadow Parks and Ballywillin (all County Antrim) and Corrstown, Magheramenagh, Glenamanus, Loguestown and Magheraboy (all County Londonderry), all in the civil parish of Ballywillin. The site of Portrush, with its excellent natural defences, probably became a permanent settlement around the 12th or 13th century. Portrush became a small fishing town from the mid 19th century. It grew substantially in the 19th century as a tourist destination, following the arrival of the railway in 1855, and by the turn of the 20th century had become one of the major resort towns of Ireland. The town is well known for its three sandy beaches, the West Strand, East Strand and White Rocks, as well as the Royal Portrush Golf Club. Though tourism declined after the Second World War, the town has expanded southwards substantially since the mid 20th century. The town is within the council area of Causeway Coast and Glens.
