Portishead, Somerset

Portishead is a coastal town in Somerset. The town, described as Portesheve in Domesday, has been a fishing port since ancient times. It began to develop as a seaside resort early in the 19th century. Portishead Dock was constructed in the 1860s to accommodate large ships unable to reach Bristol. The town's economy is now based on service industries. The docks has now been redeveloped into a marina. The town is within the council area of North Somerset.
