Port Way, Wiltshire

Port Way (aka the Portway) is an ancient road that ran from Calleva Atrebatum (near Silchester, Hampshire) to Sorbiodunum (Old Sarum, Wiltshire). Both towns predated the Roman occupation of Britain, and it is possible that the road is pre-Roman in origin. The name "Port Way" is Anglo-Saxon in origin, referring to a road between market towns. The section to the south-east of Allington, Wiltshire runs parallel to the Basingstoke to Exeter railway line, and can be seen as crop marks. This section of the road within the council area of Wiltshire.
