Port Way, Hampshire

Port Way (aka the Portway) is an ancient road that ran from Calleva Atrebatum (near Silchester, Hampshire) to Sorbiodunum (Old Sarum, Wiltshire). Both towns predated the Roman occupation of Britain, and it is possible that the road is pre-Roman in origin. The name "Port Way" is Anglo-Saxon in origin, referring to a road between market towns. The section to the north of Hannington, Hampshire runs across open countryside and cannot be easily discerned on the ground. This section of the road is within the council area of Basingstoke and Deane (Hampshire).
