Poplar, Middlesex

Poplar is a metropolitan district in the East End of London, south-east Middlesex. The area is named from the black poplar trees that once flourished on the alluvial soils beside the Thames. There was a ship-fitting industry from the 15th century. St Matthias Old Church (originally Poplar Chapel) was built by the East India Company in 1654. Poplar became a parish (separate from Stepney) in 1817, with All Saints Church (1823) being built as the parish church. The opening of the West India Docks in 1802 saw a rapid growth in housing development in the parish. Following major war-time bomb damage, Poplar saw major post-war local authority housing developments, including the Lansbury estate. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
