Pontop Hall, Durham

Pontop Hall is a mediæval house in County Durham. It is located just to the north of Dipton, three miles north-east of Consett. Pontop Hall is believed to date from the 17th century and built by the Meaburne family, with later extensions around 1700. Through its connections to families like the Salvins and Swinburnes, Pontop had a strong association with Roman Catholicism and a hidden Catholic chapel was concealed in the roof of the hall during the era of Catholic persecution. In the 1790s at the time of the French Revolution, English priests who were training at Douai in Flanders fled to Pontop Hall and were given to aid and shelter. It is within the council area of County Durham.
