Pontarddulais, Glamorgan

Pontarddulais (also Pontardulais) is a small town in Glamorgan. Pontardulais was a quiet remote hamlet for centuries. During the Middle Ages, a bridge was built at this point across the River Loughor (Y Bont Fawr). The village that developed around this bridge. The bridge was an important link between Carmarthenshire and Glamorganshire. A new single span bridge was built beside Y Bont Fawr in 1938 and the old bridge was demolished at the end of the Second World War. Pontarddulais was transformed from a rural settlement into an industrial community during the years 1872 to 1910 when six tinplate works were established. Today, Pontarddulias is largely a residential / commuter town. The town is within the council area of Swansea.
