Plympton, Devon

Plympton is a town in Devon. The manor of Plympton dates back to before the Conquest, though since ancient times it lay in two parishes: Plympton St Mary and Plympton Maurice (also known as Plympton Earl). The site of an Anglo-Saxon minster, Plympton Priory was re-founded as an Augustinian house by Bishop William Warelwast in 1121. St Mary's church, dedicated in 1311, was originally a parish chapel attached to the priory. Norman baron Richard de Redvers was granted the manor of Plympton and his son built Plympton Castle in Plympton St Maurice. In 1328 Plympton St Maurice became a stannary town to which tin mined on Dartmoor was brought for weighing and stamping. Plympton saw large-scale suburban development in the later part of the 20th century, effectively becoming one large town, now sometimes considered an eastern suburb of Plymouth. The town is within the council area of Plymouth.
