Petre's Cross, Devon

Petre's Cross is a mediæval wayside cross set within a prehistoric round cairn (Western White Barrow) on Quickbeam Hill, Dartmoor, Devon. It is one of four set up by Sir William Petre, who had purchased Brent Manor after the Dissolution and was used to mark the boundary of his estate. This cross was badly mutilated in the mid 1800’s by peat cutters who built themselves a shelter out of the stone of the cairn. The arms were knocked off the shaft which was then used as a chimney support. The shelter was later demolished and the cairn rebuilt. The shaft of the cross was re-set into the top of the cairn but in an upside down position. It is within the council area of South Hams (Devon).
