Peterborough, Northamptonshire
Peterborough is a cathedral city standing to the north of the River Nene in Northamptonshire, in the Soke of Peterborough area of the county. By the end of the 19th-century Peterborough had expanded to include the Woodstone and New Fletton areas south of the Nene in Huntingdonshire. Peterborough's old town centre has been greatly redeveloped and is surrounded but a great number of twentieth-century residential neighbourhoods, many entirely replacing older villages whose names they have adopted and which have spread south across the River Nene into Huntingdonshire. The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Andrew was originally founded as a monastery in 655 and re-built in its present form between 1118 and 1238. The Guildhall was built shortly after the restoration of King Charles II. The Lido is a striking building with elements of art deco design, opened in 1936. The city is within the council area of Peterborough.
