Penwortham, Lancashire
Penwortham is a small town in Lancashire. It stands on the south bank of the River Ribble, opposite Preston. Penwortham Castle, of which only the mound remains, was built shortly after the Norman conquest to guard the estuary and a ford crossing it. The Lower Penwortham area developed during the Victorian period. Higher Penwortham is characterised by its 1920s and later semi-detached housing. The town is within the council area of South Ribble (Lancashire).
