Pennyburn, Londonderry

Pennyburn is an urban area, lying on the west bank of the River Foyle in Londonderry, County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Pennyburn, in the civil parish of Templemore. Until the late 19th century, Pennyburn townland remained almost entirely rural, though Pennyburn Distillery operated from 1780 to 1840. The area began to see housing development from the late 19th century, as the urban area around Londonderry expanded along the river. The area beside the river was used as a ship repair facility by the Royal Navy during the Second World War and remained a naval base until 1977. The rest of the townland was developed for industry, retail and housing in the post-war period. St Patrick's Church (RC) was opened in 1934 and designed by Edward J Toye. The area is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
