Pengersick Castle, Cornwall

Pengersick Castle is a fortified manor house in Pengersick, Cornwall. While most of the original complex is in ruins, the most prominent remaining feature is the four-story 16th century tower and is one of the few towers of its type preserved in Britain. The original Pengersick family occupied a house on the site from the 12th century. After the Pengersick line died out during the 14th century plague epidemic, the estate passed to the Milliton family. The building began as a mediæval manor house, with the tower being added around 1510. In 1530, John Milliton was accused of looting a Portuguese treasure ship that wrecked nearby using the treasure to improve the manor. Much of the original structure was pulled down in the 18th century, with the stone reused for nearby farm buildings. There is evidence that the site has been occupied for approximately 5,000 years, since the Bronze Age. The castle and grounds have been used as a venue for weddings and events, including Cornish wrestling tournaments. Pengersick Castle has a reputation as one of the most haunted locations in Britain. It is within the council area of Cornwall.
