Penge, Surrey / Kent
Penge is a town on the border on Surrey and Kent. The centre of the old town is within Surrey though the town has long since spread across the border. Penge is listed as 'Penceat' in an Anglo-Saxon deed from 957. In the Victorian era, Penge developed from a small hamlet into a fashionable suburb because of the railway line and its proximity to the relocated Crystal Palace (1854). The church of St John the Evangelist was consecrated in 1850. The Crooket Billet pub, rebuild several times, dates back at least as far as 1601. The town is within the council area of Bromley.
