Pendennis Castle, Cornwall
Pendennis Castle is an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII at Falmouth, Cornwall. It formed part of the King's Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire. It defended the Carrick Roads waterway at the mouth of the River Fal. It was built on the site of a probable prehistoric hillfort. It is in the care of English Heritage which has described it as "one of the finest examples of a post-mediæval defensive promontory fort in the country". It is within the council area of Cornwall.
