Ottery St Mary, Devon
Ottery St Mary (usually known just as 'Ottery') is a town on the River Otter in Devon. It is recorded in Domesday as 'Otri'. By 1086 the manor belonged to the Church of St Mary in Rouen, the name being recorded as 'Oteri Sancte Marie' by 1242. The Church of St Mary (C of E) was consecrated in 1260. In 1335 John Grandisson, Bishop of Exeter, bought the manor from Rouen, rebuilt much of the church and converted it into a collegiate foundation. The church is noted for its painted ceiling and early 16th-century fan vaulted aisle and houses the 14th-century Ottery St Mary Astronomical Clock. The town was the birthplace of the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1772. The town's Guy Fawkes celebrations involve flaming tar-soaked barrels being paraded through the town. The town is within the council area of East Devon (Devon).
