Othona, Essex
Othona is a Roman Saxon Shore fort which was subsequently reused as an Anglo-Saxon monastery, situated on the eastern tip of the Dengie Peninsular in Essex. The fort is in a typical late-3rd-century style. Othona's location at the edge of the Dengie Peninsula was ideal for control of the estuaries of the rivers Blackwater and Colne, the latter leading to the important city of Camulodunum (Colchester). Much of the fort has been lost to the sea. The site is within the council area of Maldon (Essex).
