Orpington, Kent

Orpington is a suburban town in Kent. The earliest reference is from 1032 as 'Orpedington'. All Saints’ church is of Saxon origin. The church was remodelled around 1200 and the Priory was built nearby before 1270. The Priory was enlarged in the following two centuries and served as a residence for the rector and chaplains and as an overnight stop for the priors of Canterbury Cathedral. Orpington remained a rural village until the late 19th century. Some development followed the opening of Orpington railway station in 1868, but major suburban development followed in the 1920s and 1930s. From 1934-1965, for local government purposes, the town was the basis of Orpington urban district. The town is within the council area of Bromley.
