Omagh, Tyrone
Omagh is a large town, situated where the rivers Drumragh and Camowen meet to form the Strule, in County Tyrone. The older parts of the town lie within the townlands of Omagh and Meetinghousehill. In the 20th and 21st centuries the town has expanded into the townlands of Gortmore, Coolnagard Lower, Coolnagard Upper, Culmore, Lammy, Dergmoney Lower, Dergmoney Upper, Lisnamallard, Campsie, Mullaghmore, Lisanelly and Killyclogher. The town is within in the civil parishes of Drumragh and Cappagh. Omagh is an anglicisation of the Irish name an Óghmaigh, meaning "the virgin plain". A monastery was established on the site of the later town about 792, and a Franciscan friary was founded in 1464. Omagh was founded as a town in 1610 during the Plantation. It is traditionally considered the county town of County Tyrone. The town is within the council area of Fermanagh and Omagh.
