Oldbury, Worcestershire

Oldbury is a market town in Worcestershire, within the Black Country. The place name Oldbury comes from the Old English 'Ealdenbyrig'. By the mid 19th century, Oldbury has become a large industrial village with iron and steel-making. For local government purposes, from 1895-1966, the town was the basis of Oldbury urban district (municipal borough from 1935), during which time the town saw large-scale expansion. The Municipal Buildings (1891) were designed by Wood and Kenwick in the Renaissance style. The town is within the council area of Sandwell.
