Old Wardour Castle, Wiltshire
Old Wardour Castle is a ruined 14th-century castle near Wardour, Wiltshire. It was built in for 1390s for John, fifth Lord Lovel and remodelled in the 1570s for Sir Matthew Arundell by Robert Smythson. It has a hexagonal plan with projecting towers flanking the north entrance, and an enclosed hexagonal courtyard. It was partly destroyed during the Civil War and replaced by James Paine's Wardour Castle (aka New Wardour Castle) in 1776, at which time the bailey of the old castle was laid out as pleasure gardens. The monument is in the care of English Heritage. It is within the council area of Wiltshire.
