Okehampton, Devon

Okehampton is a historic market town, situated on the River Okement, on the northern edge of Dartmoor in Devon. It is recorded in Domesday as 'Ochementone'. Okehampton Castle was built between 1068-1086 by Baldwin FitzGilbert following a revolt in Devon against Norman rule. By the late 15th century, the town flourished owing to its role in the wool trade and regional tin mining. Okehampton Town Hall (1685) was designed in the neoclassical style and built in ashlar granite. From the mid-18th century, the town became a busy staging post for coach traffic between London and Cornwall. Okehampton has grown significantly since the 1990s as a residential and tourist hub. The town is within the council area of West Devon (Devon).
