Offa's Dyke, Shropshire

Offa's Dyke is an ancient linear earthwork which lies partly in Shropshire. Offa's Dyke is named after Offa, the Anglo-Saxon king of Mercia, who is traditionally believed to have ordered its construction. Although its precise original purpose is debated, it delineated the border between Anglian Mercia and the Welsh kingdom of Powys. A well-defined section of Offa's Dyke crosses through Churchtown in Shropshire and northwards to the border with Montgomeryshire. This part of Offa's Dyke is within the council area of Shropshire.
Historic England Scheduled Monument 1004777.
